TheMuslims’invasionoftheLevantin632–644ADmarkedthebeginningoftheMedieval Period,aninvasionthatchangedhistoryforever.ThefirstIslamicdynasty,theUmayyad,ruled theempirefromDamascusandconsideredtheSouthernLevant(theLandofIsrael)asan importantbackyard.TheybuiltRamlaastheirprovincecapital,theonlynewcityevermadein theLandofIsraelunderIslamicruleuntil1900.ThemoveofthecontrollingcentertoBagdadby thenewAbbasiddynastyin750ADmarkedthedeclineoftheSouthernLevant.TheAbbasids werereplacedbytheFatimidswhowerereplacedbytheSeljuqswhowerereplacedbythe Crusaders.In1099AD,theCrusadersinvadedtheLandofIsraelandformedtheFirstKingdomof Jerusalem,anassemblyoffeudalfamiliesruledbyaking.TheCrusaders,asmallminorityinthe region,ruledthecountrythroughfortifiedcities,roadstations,farms,andchurches.In1187AD, theylostthekingdomtoSaladin,thelegendaryAyyubidsultan,afteracolossaldefeatinthe BattleofHattin.Fouryearslater,RichardtheLionheartconqueredthecoastandestablishedthe SecondCrusadekingdom,makingAcre,themainportofentry,astheircapitalcity.An agreementwiththeAyyubidsgavetheCrusaders15yearsofcontrolinJerusalem.Startingin 1265AD,theMuslimMamlukswerecapturingCrusadercitiesoneafteranother.By1291AD,the lastCrusaderstronghold,thefortofAtlit,wasabandonedonlyafewmonthsafterthefallofthe capital,Acre.TheMamlukSultanateruledtheLevantforabout250yearsandwasreplacedby the Ottomans in 1516 AD, which marked the end of the Medieval Period.Today,youcanvisitmedievalMuslimmonumentsliketheDomeoftheRockontheTemple MountinJerusalem,theWhiteMosqueinRamla,theNimrodFortressintheNorth,and numerousMamlukroadinns(khäns)acrossthecountry.Crusaderarchitecturecanbeseen everywhereinthecountryincludinginJerusalem,Caesarea,Acre,Atlit,Apolonia(Arsuf),Safed, Montfort,KochavHayarden(Belvoir),Yehiam,Zippori,andAteret.Fortifiedchurchescanbe foundinAbuGosh,Ramla,BeitGovrin,Tiberias(St.Peter’sChurch),andCrusader-phase churchesinJerusaleminclude:TheChurchofSaintAnne,theChurchoftheHolySepulchre,the ChurchofSaintSamuel,theChapeloftheAscension,andtheChurchofSt.JohntheBaptistin Ein Kerem.
